The Young Author Workshops are designed for young writers (ages 10-17) that are interested in more in-depth writing instruction and coaching.

At the core of the workshops is the storytelling method that Erin developed called the, "Roller Coaster Model"—a visual representation of effective storytelling for young writers. It is a step-by-step approach that goes from idea to finished story. It focuses on story development and structure without overwhelming the kids or hindering their imagination. It was created specifically for youth, to keep them engaged and promote creativity.

Included in all workshops:

  • Video modules that the kids can work through at their own pace, roughly 5-30 min per module to keep their attention and to not overwhelm

  • A companion workbook that contains resources and worksheets on the concepts that are  covered

The workshops have been designed to build off of each other, giving the students the freedom to benefit from as much or as little instruction and coaching that suits their specific needs. The workshops must be taken in a prescribed order, unless otherwise stated, however the time lapse between them is up to the individual student.

The WSA MEMBERSHIP PLUS is available to all students who have registered for a Young Author Workshop. This level of membership gives the students access to ERIN, through the 'MESSAGING' feature of the site, for the duration of the workshop for guidance and to ask any questions they may have.

The first workshop in the Young Author Workshops Signature Series is the WRITING BASICS WORKSHOP, where they are taught the tools needed to craft an exciting and captivating story. Erin walks them through her step-by-step storytelling method, the Roller Coaster Model, which will set them up for success in all their writing endeavours.

The next step is the STORY FRAMEWORK CHALLENGE, this is when they put what they have learned so far to work. The students will be guided through HOW to set up the framework for their stories. A well designed framework is what will help them write captivating stories that stay with the reader long after they finish reading.

The final workshop in the series is the SHORT STORY WORKSHOP. This is when it all comes together. Erin dives deeper into some of the concepts that were touched on in the previous workshops while also introducing new material and writing methods to help the students write and complete their stories.

This writing workshop was really helpful for my story writing. I was guided through all the different aspects of story writing, covering planning, grammar, how to hook a reader, making sure my story was interesting, and more. There were videos, written advice, clear guidelines, zoom meetings, and email contact for my questions. This workshop was very informative, and it was fun to write my story. I recommend this workshop!

Lila, age 11

I always enjoyed writing but with Erin’s workshop I learned how to write like a real author! I looked forward to the lessons every week and I love how Erin gave me extra help when I needed it.

Abby, age 10

WordSmithers Academy was a phenomenal experience for my 14 year old son. Erin boosted his confidence in writing, while giving him many tips that he easily used to improve his story. This class absolutely increased his writing skills, and increased his desire to write! Looking forward to the next class!

"I would like to thank the wonderful Erin for her excellent feedback and gentle guidance throughout the editing process, and for helping me to weave the words onto the pages in the best way possible."

Fathima, age 12, author of "Love Thy Roots".
